Network Spinal Chiropractic (NS) is a gentle technique that works with your body, not against it.

Thus it is the technique of choice for newborns to the elderly

Network Spinal

Network Spinal (NS) is based on the original philosophy of chiropractic which is: You have within you an Innate Intelligence or Life Force. In Chinese medicine and Eastern traditions they call this Innate Intelligence your Chi or Prana. This Innate Intelligence is expressed via your Central Nervous System (CNS) - brain and spinal cord - through your spinal and peripheral nerves to every single cell in your body, telling it how to function and regenerate in any given moment.

When the flow of this Innate Intelligence is blocked or interfered with it creates Dis-Ease. So long as this Life Force is flowing fully, 100%, there can be no dis-ease.

Our Spine and Nervous System is our antenna to the Universe! It is our central channel; a 2 way super highway transmitting energy and information from the brain to the body and the body to the brain. Our Central Nervous System (CNS) takes in, processes and transmits information.

Thus life as we know it; our entire reality; is determined by how clear our nervous system is of interference.

Traditionally, chiropractors have recognised only one type of interference to the CNS; a structural interference (the “bone out of place” model) where the bone fixates, puts pressure on the spinal nerve roots exiting at that level, resulting in dysfunction and thus dis-ease in whatever tissues / organs / systems that nerve supplies. The chiropractor “adjusts” the bone, releasing the fixation and releasing the “pinched nerve”, thereby restoring function to the part of the body that nerve supplies.

That’s all well and good...however structural interference accounts for less than 10% of interference that can occur to the CNS. More than 90% of interference is caused by tension in the spinal cord system itself inside the bones!

Network Spinal recognises that the neuro-skeleton is primary! The bony or osseous skeleton is secondary. When the CNS goes into a high tension state of defence (fight/flight) it locks the bones up from the inside.

Thus whatever is happening with the bones is not the cause. The bony locking or fixation is secondary to tension in the spinal cord system, specifically the meninges.

The coverings of our brain and spinal cord (three membranous layers) are collectively called the meninges. The meninges hold tension in response to any and every stress or trauma that has ever overwhelmed us throughout our entire lifetime. These stresses may be emotional, mental, chemical, and/or physical in nature. It doesn’t matter the nature of the stress. The reaction of our CNS is the same. The Innate Wisdom of the body says “Whoa! Batten down the hatches. My life is in danger” and we go into a sympathetic dominant state of defence. The entire spinal cord system tightens and elongates, like a cat when it’s scared or angry. This is known as the Fight/Flight response.

This response protects us in 3 major ways. Firstly, it offers physical or mechanical protection. The meningeal system braces or “splints” around the very delicate CNS tissue inside to protect it from any physical trauma; for example a car accident or a sporting injury; a physical blow.

Secondly it conserves energy to save our lives. It does this by diverting energy away from organ systems that are not needed for our immediate, short term survival; ie. our survival through the next 20 minutes. It diverts energy to tissues that are needed for our immediate, short term survival. For example, the nerve supply to our digestive tract and our reproductive organs gets completely shut down. Instead nerve energy is redirected to our heart and lungs, to our adrenal glands, to the long muscles of our arms and legs, etc., so that we can fight off an attacker, or run faster than we’ve ever run before to get ourselves out of a life threatening situation. (Just on this note, think for a moment how many digestive and reproductive disorders exist in the Western world………….)

Thirdly, the fight/flight response shuts out incoming information. It shuts out our pain. It shuts out any feedback, be it emotional. chemical or physical in nature, that would distract the brain from overruling the body in order to survive through the next 20 minutes. This shutdown of our pain is also to protect us from the pain itself.

This fight / flight response is totally appropriate at the time of stress or trauma, however:

The fight / flight response was never meant for us to live in for longer than 20 minutes. After 20 minutes the fight / flight response becomes totally destructive to the physiology of the body, yet most of the Western world are living their lives in this state.

The CNS is designed to completely reset itself, 100%, after the stress is past. If this reset happens, happy days! However very often the CNS lacks the flexibility or safety to reset fully, so it may reset only 50%, or 20%, or 80%…….

To the degree that our nervous system hasn’t reset after a traumatic event or stress, is the degree to which right now, in this present moment, it is still firing information to the cells of the body as though that past event is happening right here and now in the present moment…….and again………and again, because that is the information or consciousness that is being replayed on the cells of the body over and over again until the CNS can switch gear.

So that relationship breakup, food poisoning, rape, death of someone close to us, work stress, car accident; that event may have happened 20 or 30 years ago, but your body gets stuck in a time warp.

Our job is to determine where your CNS has gone into Fight / Flight and hasn’t reset itself, or said differently, to find where your nervous system is responding as though something from the past is happening right here and now in the present moment.

We then use a series of light contact adjustments to the spine, no greater than the pressure you would use to your closed eyeball, specifically timed and placed to directly affect the spinal cord system inside.

The big thing with Network Spinal is that the practitioner is not doing the work! It is your body that is doing the work! The chiropractor is just holding up a mirror to the system. In response to these light contacts, the cortex self-reflects. It’s as though the Innate Wisdom of your body says “Wow! There’s a pattern whose use-by date is well and truly up!” and it resets the tension level of the entire spinal cord system, globally, for itself!

As this happens, you may experience heat or cold or tingling or twitching into different parts of your body, just as nerve impulses (information & Life Force energy) get through that weren’t getting through before. You may experience a change in your breathing. (As the system starts to heal, the first thing it will do is pull in more oxygen. Oxygen is life!). You may feel the urge to stretch or move on the table (please go with this. Your body is starting to self correct). You also may feel none of this during your first session. It will come!

PLEASE NOTE: The less you feel during your session the more you need this work. Due to the amount of defence and interference in the system, the incoming feedback from your body to your brain via your Central Nervous System may be greatly diminished.

Whenever and wherever your body holds tension, there is information within that tension that your brain was unable to deal with at the time that you experienced a particular event!

This is why it stores it in the first place. As the overwhelming information comes in, your Innate Wisdom says “I cannot let this reach the brain or it will fry!” so in it’s intelligence it walls the information off in the form of tension, compartmentalising it in some part of the body, storing it until a later time when it may have the flexibility and resources to actually process that information.

Somato Respiratory Integration -SRI

So often we are asked: What can I be doing at home to speed up my healing process?

SRI and TRE are our top two answers!

Somato Respiratory Integration (SRI) is the name given to the exercises from Dr Donny Epstein’s book “The 12 Stages of Healing”. SRI utilises your own Breath, Movement, and Touch to connect you to one of twelve Primal Rhythms. These rhythms move your Life Force Energy through your Body-Mind in a certain way, resulting in the state of Consciousness unique to that Stage of Healing. Profound healing results!

These 12 Stages of Healing and resulting 12 States of Consciousness constitute Life itself. Ie. They ARE the process of LIFE

Many years ago through adjusting literally thousands of people from all around the world, Dr. Donny Epstein (Founder of NS Chiropractic) notice that, as people went through certain stages of their healing process, they would spontaneously BREATHE in a certain way, MOVE their body in a certain way, and TOUCH their body in a certain way - and this Breath/Movement/Touch pattern seemed to be in association with a particular state of Consciousness.

As their healing progressed he would notice them begin to TOUCH their body in a different way, MOVE their body in a different way, and BREATHE in a different pattern - while experiencing a different state of Consciousness.

Donny began to map these out. He notice 12 different Breath/Movement/Touch patterns, each associated with a different State of Consciousness. These formed the basis for his book "The 12 Stages of Healing", and the exercises for each stage became known as Somato Respiratory Integration (SRI) which means Body Breath Integration.

Trauma Release Experience

Trauma Release Experience (TRE) is the perfect compliment to your Network Spinal Chiropractic care.

Shaking (or tremoring) is actually an innate, organic response when faced with trauma or a frightening situation. When the sympathetic nervous system is aroused in fear or anger, the breathing stops or becomes very shallow, the blood pressure rises and the body goes into a fight/flight or freeze response. This is our body’s way of enabling us to flee, fight off an attacker or stay completely still until the danger has passed. It’s also our body’s way of protecting the damaged part of us.

After a traumatic event, like a car accident, the body will often naturally shake to offload the trauma that made us tense up in the first place. After a Caesarean Section birth the mother often shakes afterwards and if this process is guided it measurably speeds up the recovery process. Some native tribes encourage the mother to stand immediately after child birth, and two women hold her up and walk her until she tremors, as this is seen to halve the recovery time for the mother.

In extreme situations such as severe bleeding after an injury, the freeze state stems the blood flow to prevent us from bleeding out. Once the perceived or actual danger is over, the body often uses a natural shaking mechanism to release the stored tension and return the nervous system to it’s parasympathetic state

Our body normally resets itself within 20 minutes. In situations such as war, or being in an abusive relationship, or constant work or financial stress where sympathetic arousal is constant, the body loses the ability to reset itself. When we are subjected to extreme stress the body stores and supresses the tension. TRE is designed to release that stored tension, simply and effectively, without the mind needing to be engaged at all. So we don’t necessarily need to talk about or relive the experience unless we are organically driven to do so.

TRE is a series of simple exercises which activate the psoas muscles to generate a natural tremor in our body. Dissolving stress, tension, and trauma organically.

Practising TRE at home assists our progress through the levels of Network Care as it releases stored stress, tension and trauma which may be hiding out in the body. This process grows the resilience and flexibility of our nervous system so that we are better equipped to deal with life and what it can throw at us.

Jacky Haworth has been studying and facilitating TRE since 2013. Please see her Bio in “About Us” .
